On Saturday, 31st May 2025, Kirkstall Crusaders took centre stage at the iconic AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium, proudly serving as flag bearers and the guard of honour for the Betfred Super League MND Round fixture between Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Trinity.
This unforgettable day wasn’t just about sport — it was about connection, pride, and creating opportunities for the young people in our community.
The partnership between grassroots clubs like Kirkstall Crusaders and professional organisations such as Leeds Rhinos is vital. Events like these help strengthen the ties between elite sport and local youth development. Our presence at Headingley — standing side by side with professional athletes in front of thousands of fans — represented more than just visibility. It signified recognition of the hard work being done by community coaches, volunteers, and young players every week on local pitches.
It was also a chance to show that football and rugby, though different in gameplay, share the same values: discipline, teamwork, resilience, and respect.
Over 100 of our players, from the youngest (U6) to our older youth teams (U15), proudly donned their blue and white kits and took part in the pre-match build-up. The excitement was palpable as they lined the tunnel, waved flags, and formed the guard of honour for the players. For many of them, this was their first time on the pitch at a major stadium — a moment they’ll never forget.
The electric atmosphere, made even more powerful by the MND (Motor Neurone Disease) awareness campaign, taught our players about more than just sport. It reminded us all about using platforms like rugby and football to support wider causes and unite communities.
At Kirkstall Crusaders, our mission goes beyond developing football skills. We aim to inspire confidence, build friendships, and open doors. Experiences like the Headingley takeover day show our young players what's possible — whether in sport or life — when they stay committed and work hard.
We are incredibly proud of how our players represented the club, and the feedback from families, organisers, and spectators has been overwhelmingly positive.
This event marks a step forward in our ambition to deepen community links and continue providing enriching experiences for our members. We are exploring further collaborations across sports, schools, and local groups — all with the goal of empowering our young people and building a stronger, more connected Kirkstall.
A huge thank you goes out to the Leeds Rhinos foundation for the invitation, and to all the staff, coaches, volunteers, and families who made the day such a success.
